SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - February 25th
DESCRIPTION:The weather forecast predicts temperatures in the low 30’s in the mornings so we will be working 12:30 to 4:30 in the afternoons when it is warmer.  We will be meeting by the restroom building in Trailhead Park at 12:30. \n\n\n\nWe will start out with some easy work\, raking the gravel back on to the Canyon Trail.  Last spring we spent a lot of time getting the middle section of that trail fixed up.  Over time the gravel is worked to the edge of the trail and the trailmaster would like to get it spread back across the trail.  The gravel protects the trail and we don’t want to rework that section anytime soon.  The ground is nice and moist\, it is a good time to be doing this.  We will be using rakes and McLeods.  We will be continually moving along the trail so please bring a pack to carry your water and extra cloths. \n\n\n\nThe trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-day break.  Volunteers need to bring work gloves\, water\, and snacks with a small pack to carry them\, and dress for the weather forecast.  There isn’t any work for preteens and younger – it is hard to keep them motivated for 4 hours.  You will need to sign-up so the trailmaster can plan the work and bake enough cookies.  Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org \n\n\n\nIf you can’t make it this week\, there will work parties every Thursday through Sunday into April to get some general trail maintenance along the trail system.

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - November 5th
DESCRIPTION:The progress has been slow this week\, the weather turned cool and that apparently discouraged some volunteers\, only a few helpers each day except Sunday’s crew of 5. The work is much easier now that we have completed the rocky section. We have completed about 600 feet of the 3500 foot long trail with gravel and another 750 feet is ready for the gravel. The trailmaster has provided the above map showing the progress.  After Tuesday’s rain the ground is in great shape for the work but it can freeze solid soon. \n\n\n\nThe schedule this week is Thursday through Sunday – 8 AM to noon.  We will be meeting where the trail meets Morency Drive near the top of the east shoulder of Little Badger. See the map below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will be concentrating on getting the trail ready for gravel by smoothing out the bumps and getting the rocks out.  The tools we will be using are mostly rakes and McLeods (big rakes). If you can’t make it this week\, there will work parties every Thursday through Sunday up until the end of November. \n\n\n\nThe trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-morning break. Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org

DESCRIPTION:The first week of the fall trail work season got a good start with the weather\, sunny and warm all days. Last year we dug out the rough trail bed for a trail from Morency Drive to the summit of Little Badger and this fall we are completing it. In this first week we completed about 600 feet of the 3500 foot long trail. That should be the hardest section\, it was in loose and some not so loose rock.  We will continue the work for the next few weeks hopefully completing the trail in mid to late November. \n\n\n\nThe schedule this week is Thursday through Sunday – 8 AM to noon.  We will be meeting where the trail meets Morency Drive near the top of the east shoulder of Little Badger. See the map below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe work will be to do smoothing of the trail getting bumps and a rocks out.  This will be completed mostly using rakes and McLeods and distributing the gravel as it is delivered\, again with rakes and McLeods. The gravel hauler will also need to be loaded using shovels and buckets. If you can’t make it this week\, there will work parties every Thursday through Sunday up until the end of November. \n\n\n\nThe trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-morning break. Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - January 27th
DESCRIPTION:Well the first week of early trail work went great! The crews worked on Thursday and Friday afternoons widening the middle of the Canyon Trail. They moving about the rocks on the downhill edge over a foot or so for about 200 feet. This is an easy way to make the trail wider. We even had two ladies stop their hikes and help out for a few hours! Later in this project we will clean up the trail bed and then add a fresh layer of gravel to help keep it smooth. \n\n\n\nThis week we will try Thursday and Friday again. The current forecast says those days will reach about 40 in the afternoons with some sun and little wind. We will work in the afternoon when it is warmer\, starting at 12:30. There is no end time set\, you can leave when it cools off. \n\n\n\nWe will continue working on the middle section of the Canyon Trail\, moving more of the edging rocks out to widen the trail. It will be hand work using garden trowels and packing sticks plus a little work with pick-maddocks\, shovels and rakes. The work is easy\, the rocks are small and you get to work at your own pace. \n\n\n\nThe trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-afternoon break. Volunteers will need to bring work gloves\, water and snacks with a pack to carry them\, and maybe a set of knee pads or a garden pad to kneel on. Remember to dress in layers so you can shed a layer after you get moving. There isn’t any work for preteens and younger\, it is just hard to keep them motivated for a few hours. \n\n\n\nSignups help with planning and making sure the trailmaster bakes enough cookies. Sign-ups are also good in case I make last minute changes to the schedule. Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - May 28th
DESCRIPTION:We have had a task come up; it is part of our trails to Little Badger – we need to remove some gravel. The work will be scrapping the gravel into piles and then loading it into our gravel hauler which will then move it to nearby storage piles. We will be using Mcleods\, shovels and buckets. \nThe schedule is Thursday\, Friday and Saturday May 26 to 28\, 8:30 AM to 12:30. We will be meeting by the restroom building in Trailhead Park and then driving closer to where it is just a short walk to the work site so you will need to be on time. \nThe weather forecast looks like good Tri-Cities weather for May. The temperatures will be cool in the mornings with a maybe little wind on Friday. \nThe trailmaster will be working elsewhere\, mostly chopping back those weeds on the side of the trails so David Comstock will be leading these work parties. We will provide all the tools\, volunteers will need to bring work gloves\, water and snacks with a pack to carry them\, and dress for the weather forecast. There isn’t any work for preteens and younger\, it is just hard to keep them motivated for 4 hours. \nSignups help with planning and are also good in case the works goes faster than expected. We will be using Mcleods\, shovels and buckets.\n\nThe schedule is Thursday\, Friday and Saturday May 26 to 28\, 8:30 AM to 12:30. We will be meeting by the restroom building in Trailhead Park and then driving closer to where it is just a short walk to the work site so you will need to be on time.\n\nThe weather forecast looks like good Tri-Cities weather for May. The temperatures will be cool in the mornings with a maybe little wind on Friday.\n\nThe trailmaster will be working elsewhere\, mostly chopping back those weeds on the side of the trails so David Comstock will be leading these work parties. We will provide all the tools\, volunteers will need to bring work gloves\, water and snacks with a pack to carry them\, and dress for the weather forecast. There isn’t any work for preteens and younger\, it is just hard to keep them motivated for 4 hours.\n\nSignups help with planning and are also good in case the works goes faster than expected. Please let me know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org

SUMMARY:Tailwork Party - April 16th
DESCRIPTION:This week we will be working on two projects. The smaller is on Friday morning to install a new platform and interruptive sign on the Skyline Trail. This will involve removing the grasses\, moving some rocks\, installing the sign and then graveling the platform. \nThe second project is part of the new trail to Little Badger. I will be renting an excavator to help with building a rock wall. Since we are renting equipment we will be working morning and afternoon shifts. The excavator will be doing the heavy lifting but I will need help with the final positioning of the rocks. \nThe weather forecast looks like good Tri-Cities spring days\, you know a little wind and mild temperatures. Any wind should not be a problem as we will be on the north side of Badger. \nThe Trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the 10:30 break.  Volunteers will need to bring work gloves\, water and snacks with a pack to carry them\, and dress for the weather forecast.  There isn’t any work for preteens and younger\, it is just hard to keep them motivated for 4 hours. \nSignups help with planning and making sure The Trailmaster bake enough cookies.  Sign-ups are also good in case The Trailmaster make last minute changes to the schedule.  Please let me know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org \nJim Langdon\nTrailmaster\, Friends of Badger Mountain\nTrailmaster@friendsofbadger.org\n509-943-3992 or 509-940-7234
