SUMMARY:Trailwork Party on October 25th
DESCRIPTION:All days we will be meeting near the Trailhead Park restroom building. \nA couple of weeks into this project and the volunteer crews have installed over 850 feet of rocks along the edge of the new Sagebrush Trail. We are now at the upper wide spot and through most of the steep sloped area so placing the rocks will get easier. See the attached picture of the new rock wall at the start of the trail that Brian and I built on Friday. \nWe have been averaging only four people a day. We have been getting lots of complements on how great the trails are but it takes volunteers to keep them that way. We could use some more help! \nI will provide all the tools. You will need to bring work gloves\, snacks and water\, and dress for the weather. Also we will be working next to the ground so maybe a gardening pad? There isn’t any work for preteens and younger. \nSignups helps with planning and making sure we have all the tools we need and how many cookies I need to bake. Signups are also good in case I can make last minute changes to the schedule. SUMMARY:Trailwork Party on National Public Lands Day
DESCRIPTION:Trail work starts for the fall season \nWhen: Sunday\, September 23rd\, 8:30 to 12:30\nWhere: We will be working on the Sagebrush Trail near Trailhead Park \nThe Friends of Badger Mountain will be teaming with REI for this upcoming National Public Lands Day\, well actually the day after\, Sunday\, September 23rd.  We will be working to finish the new edition to the Sagebrush Trail which was extended down to Trailhead Park earlier this spring to give an alternate route around the steps.  Part of the work could not be completed because of delivery problems for some rocks. We now have the rocks so let’s get them in place! \nWhy the rocks? The soil on the north side of Badger Mountain is made of very fine particles\, mostly wind deposits. That’s right\, it is dust and is very weak if you were to walk along the edge. We need to support this downhill edge of the trail or it will sluff off narrowing the trail. You need to bring work gloves\, water and snacks\, and dress for the weather forecast. Also knee pads may be helpful.  All tools will be provided.  There will be no work for preteens and younger. \nPlease sign-up by sending me an email at trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org. Signing up helps with planning the work and having enough tools available.

SUMMARY:August 17th Trail Work Party on Badger
DESCRIPTION:Last week the crew did a lot of work on the lower Canyon Trail filling in many pot holes. We used 90 to 100 gallons of water and 3 loads of gravel. We did not get to the upper part of the trail so I will be having another work party this Friday to work of that part. \nWhen – Friday\, August 17th\, meet at 6:30 AM. An early start so we do not have to work in the heat.\nMeet – By the restroom building in Trailhead Park \nI again need some help doing some repair work the Canyon Trail. There are still a few potholes and it is best to get them while they are small. The bigger the hole\, the more work to repair. We will be working on the upper switchback\, the part below the stone bench. \nPotholes in our trails are like ones in streets. The gravel protective layer is worn away exposing the easily damaged dirt below. As trail users walk on the dirt it turns to dust making the hole deeper and undermining the gravel protected edges expanding the hole. To repair them we need to fill the hole with moistened dirt/gravel mix and then top it with a fresh layer of gravel. It takes about ½ to one gallon of water per square foot to repair a pothole. \nThe work is to get the needed gravel and water to the pothole\, fill it in and then tamp the surface firm. I have already started stockpiling water in the area. We will be using a wheelbarrow with brakes to move the gravel down from the top. I have left two green jugs along the trail. If you are out for a hike and have a little extra water in your water bottle\, how about donating some into the jugs? If anyone has a high clearance vehicle and would like to drive jugs of water to the top\, please let me know. We can do that any day/time.

SUMMARY:Noxious Weed Pulling
DESCRIPTION:Another noxious weed pulling effort on Candy Mountain is planned for this coming Sunday. Yellow Star Thistle is beginning to bloom and will soon be forming seed. The volunteer crews are trying to prevent any seed formation and dispersal this year. The manual pulling efforts last year yielded very good results in the areas we were able to cover. However\, the invasive weed pressure is still strong in some areas not reached last year. Continued volunteers for a couple more weeks\, should give us the upper hand in returning the Candy Mountain Preserve to a more pristine natural state \nWhen: Sunday\, July 15th\, 2018\nMeet at: Candy Mountain Trail-head parking lot\, off Dallas Rd. on PR 669 Rd.\nTime: 7:00 – 10:00 am\, but feel free to join us at any other time that fits your schedule. David Beach will meet volunteers arriving at 7 am and Susan Varnum will meet the 8:00 am group in the parking lot.\nDuties: Hand pulling Yellow Star Thistle plants ranging in size from small seedlings to larger plants already starting to bloom and developing spikes. We will bag and remove any plants nearing bloom stage. Less-mature plants will be pulled and left to dry up on the ground. \nTools: Bring good strong gloves! Some volunteers have used small pruning clippers\, or small forked root-cutting “stabbers” on a handle (like an asparagus harvesting knife).\nPulling location: Approx. 1/2 – 3/4 mile up the trail on the north slope\, facing West Richland. If you don’t meet up with the group in the parking lot\, hike on up and look for us down-slope from the trail. If you get to the first big switchback turn on the trail\, looking down on the West Richland water storage tank\, you should see us down the hill. Terrain is sloped and uneven. \nPlease forward this notice to anyone else you think might be interested. For those who might not be experts at knowing the difference between noxious weeds and native plants\, we will give guidance. \nReply to Susan Varnum (susan.varnum@gmail.com) and let us know what time you plan to arrive so we have an idea who to be looking for\, or just show up with your gloves\, sun protection\, drinking water\, snacks and find us. Since we are working some distance from the trail-head and are constantly moving along\, having a small back-pack or fanny-pack is useful to carry your “stuff”. If you have some plastic grocery bags\, bring them along for the blooming plants and we will have larger garbage bags to collect in also. See you on the mountain!

DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Badger Mountain will be teaming with the Kennewick REI store for a National Trails Day work event. We will be working from 9 AM to noon. Please come a little early to sign in. \nWe will be clearing the weeds away from the edges of the Canyon and Sagebrush Trails. We like to remove the grasses\, mustards and other plants from around the rocks along the edge of the trail and from the uphill edge where they are narrowing the trail. The weeds will be pulled or cut off with hoes and McLeods. Kind of like working in a garden. \nWe will meet at Trailhead Park and break into groups\, pick up tools and hike up the trails for the work. All work will be on the Canyon and Sagebrush Trails\, there will not be any work in Trailhead Park itself. \nYou should bring water and snacks\, work gloves\, sunscreen\, and dress for the weather forecast. All tools will be provided. Since we will be moving along the trail while we work\, you should also bring a small pack to carry your water and extra cloths in. \nSignups are not required but it would be nice if you let me know that you are coming.
