SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - November 14th
DESCRIPTION:The crews last week completed removing the rocks from the worse part of the east Skyline Trail and graveled about 400 feet of it.  The trails are still pretty dry but hopefully this week’s rain will help that. \n\n\n\nThis week we will continue working on the east Skyline Trail.  The work will be to remove a few more rocks near the lower road crossing\, widen it out to 5 feet and then adding some new gravel.  The remaining rocks near the road are a little bigger so we will be using pick mattocks and pry bars.  Other than those few remaining rocks the trail in this area is mostly dirt and it is easy work to widen and smooth the trail out with McLeods and rakes and adding the new gravel. \n\n\n\nWhen: Thursday through Sunday\, November 14 to 17. \n\n\n\nTime: 8 to noon \n\n\n\nMeeting Place: the Badger Mountain Westgate parking lot off of Dallas Road.  We will then carpool to near the work site. \n\n\n\nLast week the trailmaster had one helper on Thursday\, five on Friday\, two on Saturday and three on Sunday.  Potential schedule this week depending on help:  Thursday remove the last of the rocks.  Last week the crew had a blast getting out the large rocks.  It is teamwork and you don’t have to be strong to do it.  On Friday or Saturday the trailmaster would like to have at least five helpers lay down the gravel.  Hopefully on Sunday we can then finish this project with cleaning up the last of the trail. \n\n\n\nThe trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-morning break.  Volunteers need to bring work gloves\, water\, and snacks with a small pack to carry them\, and dress for the weather forecast.  There isn’t any work for preteens and younger – it is hard to keep them motivated for 4 hours.  You will need to sign-up so the trailmaster can plan the work and bake enough cookies.  Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org \n\n\n\nIf you can’t make it this week\, there will work parties on Thursday through Sunday\, until around Thanksgiving.  We will see how the weather holds out.

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - November 10th
DESCRIPTION:This week the trailmaster will be working on the east Skyline Trail\, continuing to remove rocks\, widen it out to 5 feet and then adding some new gravel.  A large group from Gesa already cleaned up about 700 feet of the trail this fall.  The actual work will be to remove rocks from the trail bed using pick mattocks and hauling the rocks off with our gravel hauler.  Then smoothing the trail out with McLeods and rakes and adding the new gravel. Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - April 7th
DESCRIPTION:Update: The weather was great last week and the flowers are coming out.  We had some good crews and great progress.  We have completed rebuilding and graveling about 1600 feet of the trail starting at the Badger summit down the east Skyline Trail to about 25 feet shy of the 2.25 mile marker.  Still getting a lot of comments on how great the trail now looks. \n\n\n\nThis Week: The weather for this coming week looks good with highs around 60 with a chance of needed rain.  There will be work parties on Thursday through Sunday\, 8 till noon.  We will be meeting at the Trails Building at Westgate Parking lot (the Skyline trailhead off of Dallas Road) and then drive up to near the work. \n\n\n\nWe will be working on the East Skyline Trail\, continuing down as far as we have time.  The work will be to restore the trail by pulling the gravel back up on to it and removing rocks that have worked their way to the surface and making it 5 feet wide.  New gravel will also be added to complete the restoration. \n\n\n\nThe Trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-morning break.  Volunteers need to bring work gloves\, water\, and snacks with a small pack to carry them\, and dress for the weather forecast.  Remember if there is a little breeze at home there will be much more on the top where we are working.  There isn’t any work for preteens and younger – it is hard to keep them motivated for 4 hours.  You will need to sign-up so the trailmaster can plan the work and bake enough cookies.  Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org

DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting at the Trails Building at Westgate Parking lot (the Skyline trailhead off of Dallas Road) and then drive up to the summit. \n\n\n\nThe work we are doing is raking the gravel back on to the East Skyline Trail\, working from the top down.  The gravel forms a hard layer protecting the soft dirt from wear\, without it the trails would rapidly turn into gulleys.  Over time as we use the trails the gravel moves to the downhill edge and the trailmaster would like to get it spread back across the trail.  We will also be removing some rocks that now stick up in the trail.  The ground is starting to dry\, so we need to get as much completed as possible.  We will be using rakes and McLeods plus some picks to get the rocks out.  We continually move along the trail so please bring a pack to carry your water and extra clothes.

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - March 21st
DESCRIPTION:Update: This last week the crews completed another 600 feet of trail\, cleaning out tons of rocks from the trail and rebuilding the Skyline/Canyon Trail junction.  We had many people tell us how well the trail looked as they passed. \n\n\n\nThis Week: The weather for this coming week looks good with highs in the 60’s\, maybe a little rain later but we need that.  There will be work parties on Thursday through Sunday\, 8 till noon.  We will be meeting at the Trails Building at Westgate Parking lot (the Skyline trailhead off of Dallas Road) and then drive up to the summit. \n\n\n\nSaturday Only – We will be working on the Little Badger Trail off of Morence Drive to avoid the Badger Mountain Challenge event. The trailmaster can send a map of the meeting location on request.

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - March 17th
DESCRIPTION:Weekly Update\n\n\n\nOn Friday the crews completed the work on the Canyon Trail\, it looks great. We moved over to the Skyline Trail on Saturday and were blown away just before quitting time but did get to see a double rainbow while hiking down. On Sunday we made it to the top\, felt the wind push us around and then called it a day. Again we saw a rainbow on the way down. Never did see where that pot of gold was. \n\n\n\nPlan for Trailwork\n\n\n\nThe weather for this week looks pretty good so far with highs in the 60’s\, maybe even up to 70. Since it has finally warmed up the trailmaster will be moving the start time to 8:00 in the morning. There will be work parties on Thursday through Sunday\, 8 till noon. We will also be meeting at the Trails Building at Westgate Parking lot (the Skyline trailhead off of Dallas Road) and then drive up to the summit. \n\n\n\nThe work we are doing is raking the gravel back on to the Canyon Trail. The ground is still nice and moist\, it is a good time to be doing this. We will be using rakes and McLeods plus some picks to get the rocks out. We continually move along the trail so please bring a pack to carry your water and extra clothes. Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org \n\n\n\nIf you can’t make it this week\, there will work parties every Thursday through Sunday into April to do some general trail maintenance along the trail system.
