SUMMARY:Spring Equinox Hike
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, March 20\, is the spring equinox\, on which the last sunset of winter – or the first sunset of spring – occurs at 7:12 PM. Some of us will be on top of Badger Mountain to celebrate this biannual celestial event. \n\n\n\nWe’ll leave from the Badger Mountain Trailhead asphalt parking lot\, at the top of Queensgate Dr\, by 6:15 (feel free to leave earlier or later and we’ll see you at the top). We’ll go up the steps on the Canyon Trail to get to the western summit of Badger Mountain\, at the second set of towers facing Rattlesnake Mt\, before the sun sets. Bring a friend\, a light jacket\, and a flashlight in case you linger on the mountaintop. The weather is expected to be okay\, with a high that day of 58. \n\n\n\nIn the ancient tradition of seeing winter’s end and welcoming spring’s arrival\, let’s look to the sky while keeping our feet firmly on the ground. Happy spring.

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - January 27th
DESCRIPTION:Well the first week of early trail work went great! The crews worked on Thursday and Friday afternoons widening the middle of the Canyon Trail. They moving about the rocks on the downhill edge over a foot or so for about 200 feet. This is an easy way to make the trail wider. We even had two ladies stop their hikes and help out for a few hours! Later in this project we will clean up the trail bed and then add a fresh layer of gravel to help keep it smooth. \n\n\n\nThis week we will try Thursday and Friday again. The current forecast says those days will reach about 40 in the afternoons with some sun and little wind. We will work in the afternoon when it is warmer\, starting at 12:30. There is no end time set\, you can leave when it cools off. \n\n\n\nWe will continue working on the middle section of the Canyon Trail\, moving more of the edging rocks out to widen the trail. It will be hand work using garden trowels and packing sticks plus a little work with pick-maddocks\, shovels and rakes. The work is easy\, the rocks are small and you get to work at your own pace. \n\n\n\nThe trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-afternoon break. Volunteers will need to bring work gloves\, water and snacks with a pack to carry them\, and maybe a set of knee pads or a garden pad to kneel on. Remember to dress in layers so you can shed a layer after you get moving. There isn’t any work for preteens and younger\, it is just hard to keep them motivated for a few hours. \n\n\n\nSignups help with planning and making sure the trailmaster bakes enough cookies. Sign-ups are also good in case I make last minute changes to the schedule. Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org

SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Hike
DESCRIPTION:Plan to get to the summit before sunset\, so give yourself enough time. You can join our small entourage when we leave from the Badger Mt Trailhead asphalt parking lot\, at the top of Queensgate Dr\, at 3:20. We’ll head up the Canyon Trail\, although you might use the Sagebrush route if you don’t like the steps\, but that does add extra travel time. We’ll get to the western summit of Badger Mt\, at the second set of towers facing Rattlesnake Mt\, hopefully before the sun sets. Bring a friend\, appropriate clothing\, and a flashlight. Hope to see you there.

SUMMARY:Passion and Persistence: How Badger Mountain Preserve Was Created
DESCRIPTION:Join co-founder Sharon Grant in this engaging presentation about how a group of volunteers were able to create the 10-mile Badger Mountain Trail. \nFriends of Badger Mountain\, founded in January 2003\, has preserved 1\,000 acres of local ridge land and created over 10 miles of trails.  How did a group of volunteers do this?  Sharon Grant\, who co-founded Friends of Badger\, will talk about lessons learned and how this community treasure draws over 300\,000 users a year.  The most important lesson…”If you want to go far\, go together.”

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - May 28th
DESCRIPTION:We have had a task come up; it is part of our trails to Little Badger – we need to remove some gravel. The work will be scrapping the gravel into piles and then loading it into our gravel hauler which will then move it to nearby storage piles. We will be using Mcleods\, shovels and buckets. \nThe schedule is Thursday\, Friday and Saturday May 26 to 28\, 8:30 AM to 12:30. We will be meeting by the restroom building in Trailhead Park and then driving closer to where it is just a short walk to the work site so you will need to be on time. \nThe weather forecast looks like good Tri-Cities weather for May. The temperatures will be cool in the mornings with a maybe little wind on Friday. \nThe trailmaster will be working elsewhere\, mostly chopping back those weeds on the side of the trails so David Comstock will be leading these work parties. We will provide all the tools\, volunteers will need to bring work gloves\, water and snacks with a pack to carry them\, and dress for the weather forecast. There isn’t any work for preteens and younger\, it is just hard to keep them motivated for 4 hours. \nSignups help with planning and are also good in case the works goes faster than expected. SUMMARY:Tailwork Party - April 16th
DESCRIPTION:This week we will be working on two projects. The smaller is on Friday morning to install a new platform and interruptive sign on the Skyline Trail. This will involve removing the grasses\, moving some rocks\, installing the sign and then graveling the platform. \nThe second project is part of the new trail to Little Badger. I will be renting an excavator to help with building a rock wall. Since we are renting equipment we will be working morning and afternoon shifts. The excavator will be doing the heavy lifting but I will need help with the final positioning of the rocks. \nThe weather forecast looks like good Tri-Cities spring days\, you know a little wind and mild temperatures. Any wind should not be a problem as we will be on the north side of Badger. \nThe Trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the 10:30 break.  Volunteers will need to bring work gloves\, water and snacks with a pack to carry them\, and dress for the weather forecast.  There isn’t any work for preteens and younger\, it is just hard to keep them motivated for 4 hours. \nSignups help with planning and making sure The Trailmaster bake enough cookies.  Sign-ups are also good in case The Trailmaster make last minute changes to the schedule.  Please let me know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org \nJim Langdon\nTrailmaster\, Friends of Badger Mountain\nTrailmaster@friendsofbadger.org\n509-943-3992 or 509-940-7234

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - April 15th

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - March 18th
DESCRIPTION:This week we will continue working near the top of Candy Mountain. We will be improving the tread and adding more rocks along the edge. The trailmaser can provide rides to the top so we don’t have to walk up. So far the weather forecast looks great. \nThis week’s schedule:\nThursday March 17 to Sunday\, March 20\, 8:30 to 12:30.\nMeeting by the kiosk in the Candy Mountain parking lot.
