SUMMARY:Trailwork Party on October 14th
DESCRIPTION:Work days this week and next week will be Thursday through Sunday\, from 8:30 to 12:30\, meeting near the Trailhead Park restroom building. \nWhy the rocks? The soil on the north side of Badger Mountain is made of very fine particles\, mostly wind deposits. That’s right\, it is piled up dust and is very weak. We need to support the downhill edge of the trail or it will sluff off narrowing the trail and making it less safe. \nI will provide all the tools. You will need to bring work gloves\, snacks and water\, and dress for the weather. Also we will be working next to the ground so maybe a gardening pad? There isn’t any work for preteens and younger. \nSignups helps with planning and making sure we have all the tools we need and how many cookies I need to bake. Please let me know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org \nI will have work days most Fridays Saturdays and Sundays and various weekdays until Thanksgiving. If you can not make it to this week’s work parties\, maybe you can plan for one of these other days.

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party on National Public Lands Day
DESCRIPTION:Trail work starts for the fall season \nWhen: Sunday\, September 23rd\, 8:30 to 12:30\nWhere: We will be working on the Sagebrush Trail near Trailhead Park \nThe Friends of Badger Mountain will be teaming with REI for this upcoming National Public Lands Day\, well actually the day after\, Sunday\, September 23rd.  We will be working to finish the new edition to the Sagebrush Trail which was extended down to Trailhead Park earlier this spring to give an alternate route around the steps.  Part of the work could not be completed because of delivery problems for some rocks. We now have the rocks so let’s get them in place! \nWhy the rocks? The soil on the north side of Badger Mountain is made of very fine particles\, mostly wind deposits. That’s right\, it is dust and is very weak if you were to walk along the edge. We need to support this downhill edge of the trail or it will sluff off narrowing the trail. You need to bring work gloves\, water and snacks\, and dress for the weather forecast. Also knee pads may be helpful.  All tools will be provided.  There will be no work for preteens and younger. \nPlease sign-up by sending me an email at trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org. Signing up helps with planning the work and having enough tools available.

SUMMARY:September 9th Noxious Weed Pulling
DESCRIPTION:The final noxious weed pulling effort of the Summer on Candy Mountain is planned for this coming Sunday. The weather forecast is looking favorable\, with moderate temperatures and the smoke moving out of the area. The Yellow Star Thistle plants remaining are blooming and starting to set seed. The volunteer crews are working to prevent any seed formation and dispersal this year. We feel we have located nearly all areas of noxious weeds on Candy Mountain and removed all we could find. The job remaining is to return to the most severely infested\, previously weeded area for follow up weeding — new plants are blooming and of course\, we missed some plants on earlier passes. We could use additional crew members for this final cleanup effort! We feel it is still valuable to continue removing as many plants as possible. It will show a huge benefit next year with reduced populations of new plants to deal with in currently infested areas. And\, we will have mostly prevented the spread of the noxious weeds to any new areas.\nSO\, in summary —– we are feeling very optimistic about the awesome noxious weed control progress made to date (thank you volunteers). We estimate that this final weeding session will be needed to finish the project for this summer. We will continue to monitor conditions and will plan to survey the Candy Mt. Preserve later this Fall and decide if any spraying is warranted. \nWhen: Sunday September 9th\, 2018\nMeet at: Candy Mountain Trail-head parking lot\, off Dallas Rd. on PR 669 Rd. Address is 71004 E. 669 PR N.E.\nTime: 7:00 – 10:00 am\, but feel free to join us for any other time-frame that fits your schedule. Dave Beach will meet volunteers arriving at 7 am in the parking lot.\nDuties: Hand pulling Yellow Star Thistle plants ranging in size from small single plants to larger branched plants. Both are blooming and developing seed — along with the dreaded spikes. We will bag and remove all plants at this stage of development. \nTools & Clothing: Bring good strong gloves! Long sleeved shirts and long pants are recommended. The thorny spikes just beneath the blooms are making their appearance on most of the plants\, so puncture and scratch protection is helpful. Generally\, just pulling the plants has proven to be the most practical method of removal\, but small pruning clippers can help on the few larger mature plants.\nWork location: Most of the Yellow Star Thistle work is still approximately 3/4 mile up the trail on the north slope\, facing West Richland. If you don’t meet up with the group in the parking lot\, hike on up and look for us down-slope from the first big switchback-turn on the trail. You will be looking down on the West Richland water storage tank. If no volunteers are in site\, just walk a little downhill until you find Yellow Star Thistle plants — pull and bag them! At this stage\, volunteers will be ranging over larger areas so might not be immediately visible. Terrain is sloped and uneven — sturdy boots recommended. \nPlease forward this notice to anyone else you think might be interested. For those who might not be experts at knowing the difference between noxious weeds and native plants\, we will give guidance. \nReply to davidbeach47@gmail.com so we have an idea who to be looking for\, or just show up with your gloves\, sun protection\, drinking water\, snacks and find us. Since we are working some distance from the trail-head and are constantly moving along\, having a small back-pack or fanny-pack is useful to carry your “stuff”. If you have some plastic grocery bags\, bring them along for the blooming plants and we will have larger garbage bags to collect in. See you on the mountain in the cool morning air!

SUMMARY:September 2nd Weed Pulling Effort
DESCRIPTION:Another noxious weed pulling effort on Candy Mountain is planned for this coming Sunday. The weather forecast is looking more favorable with reduced temperatures and the smoke out of the area. Yellow Star Thistle is in full bloom and starting to set seed. The volunteer crews are trying to prevent any seed formation and dispersal this year. We are still finding new patches and needing to return to previously weeded patches for follow up weeding. We could use additional crew members for a short while longer! Although a few mature plants are starting to drop small amounts of seed\, we feel it still valuable to continue removing as many plants as possible. It will show a huge benefit next year on the reduced populations of new plants to deal with in currently infested areas\, and will have mostly stopped the spread of the noxious weeds to new areas. \nThe Star Thistle patches are now becoming more separated and we are seeing more isolated plants or small groups of plants. The work now for the crews will involve more walking and searching on the rest of the Candy Mountain Preserve and less giant patches to pull. However\, crews will need to revisit the areas of heavy infestation that were already weeded because new plants are now showing themselves and blooming. We will also need to walk over the areas that were spot sprayed earlier this spring. We are finding plants that were missed by the spray and others that got the tops burned out but still producing seed on the lower branches. \nSO\, in summary —– we are feeling optimistic about the noxious weed control progress made to date (thank you volunteers). We estimate that 1 or 2 more weeding sessions will be needed to finish the project for this summer\, depending on size of crews. We will plan to survey the Candy Mt. Preserve later this Fall and decide if any spraying is warranted. \nWhen: Sunday September 2nd\, 2018\nMeet at: Candy Mountain Trail-head parking lot\, off Dallas Rd. on PR 669 Rd. Address is 71004 E. 669 PR N.E.\nTime: 7:00 – 10:00 am\, but feel free to join us for any other time-frame that fits your schedule. Dave Beach will meet volunteers arriving at 7 am in the parking lot.\nDuties: Hand pulling Yellow Star Thistle plants ranging in size from small single plants to larger branched plants\, both already blooming and developing seed — along with the dreaded spikes. If no volunteers are in site\, just walk downhill until you find Yellow Star Thistle plants — pull and bag them! At this stage\, volunteers will be ranging over larger areas so might not be immediately visible. Terrain is sloped and uneven — sturdy boots recommended. \nPlease forward this notice to anyone else you think might be interested. For those who might not be experts at knowing the difference between noxious weeds and native plants\, we will give guidance.\nReply to davidbeach47@gmail.com so we have an idea who to be looking for\, or just show up with your gloves\, sun protection\, drinking water\, snacks and find us.

SUMMARY:August 17th Trail Work Party on Badger
DESCRIPTION:Last week the crew did a lot of work on the lower Canyon Trail filling in many pot holes. We used 90 to 100 gallons of water and 3 loads of gravel. We did not get to the upper part of the trail so I will be having another work party this Friday to work of that part. \nWhen – Friday\, August 17th\, meet at 6:30 AM. An early start so we do not have to work in the heat.\nMeet – By the restroom building in Trailhead Park \nI again need some help doing some repair work the Canyon Trail. There are still a few potholes and it is best to get them while they are small. The bigger the hole\, the more work to repair. We will be working on the upper switchback\, the part below the stone bench. \nPotholes in our trails are like ones in streets. The gravel protective layer is worn away exposing the easily damaged dirt below. As trail users walk on the dirt it turns to dust making the hole deeper and undermining the gravel protected edges expanding the hole. To repair them we need to fill the hole with moistened dirt/gravel mix and then top it with a fresh layer of gravel. It takes about ½ to one gallon of water per square foot to repair a pothole. \nThe work is to get the needed gravel and water to the pothole\, fill it in and then tamp the surface firm. I have already started stockpiling water in the area. We will be using a wheelbarrow with brakes to move the gravel down from the top. Please sign-up by sending me an email at trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org. Signing up helps with planning the work and having enough tools available. \nYou need to bring work gloves\, water and snacks\, and dress for the weather forecast. All tools will be provided. If 6:30 is too early for you\, you can start a little later and meet us at the work site\, just let me know in advance. \nI can use some help getting the water up there. I have left two green jugs along the trail. If you are out for a hike and have a little extra water in your water bottle\, how about donating some into the jugs? If anyone has a high clearance vehicle and would like to drive jugs of water to the top\, please let me know. We can do that any day/time.

SUMMARY:August 12th Weed Pulling Effort
DESCRIPTION:Another noxious weed pulling effort on Candy Mountain is planned for this coming Sunday. Yellow Star Thistle is nearly in full bloom and starting to set seed. The volunteer crews are trying to prevent any seed formation and dispersal this year. Unfortunately\, the hot temperatures are maturing the Star Thistle faster than the weeding crews can remove it all. We could use additional crew members for a while longer! A group of 12 LDS Missionaries helped us gain ground on Thursday. A few more larger crews and we will have accomplished a major setback on the spread of the Yellow Star Thistle for the coming years. \nAttention: John Covey of the Fun\, Fit and Over Fifty Club is encouraging members to join us for the coming weeding sessions on Wednesday August 15th and Sunday August 19th.

SUMMARY:Noxious Weed Pulling July 25th
DESCRIPTION:Another noxious weed pulling effort on Candy Mountain is planned for this coming Wednesday. Yellow Star Thistle is nearly in full bloom and will soon be setting seed. The volunteer crews are trying to prevent any seed formation and dispersal this year. Unfortunately\, the Star Thistle is maturing faster than the weeding crews can remove it all. We could use some additional crew members for a while! \nWhen: Wednesday\, July 25th\, 2018\nMeet at: Candy Mountain Trail-head parking lot\, off Dallas Rd. on PR 669 Rd.\nTime: 7:00 – 10:00 am\, but feel free to join us at any other time that fits your schedule. David Beach will meet volunteers arriving at 7 am in the parking lot.\nDuties: Hand pulling Yellow Star Thistle plants ranging in size from smaller seedlings to larger plants already blooming and developing spikes. We will bag and remove any plants nearing bloom stage\, which is most of the plants at this stage.\nTools: Bring good strong gloves! Some volunteers have used small pruning clippers\, or small forked root-cutting “stabbers” on a handle (like an asparagus harvesting knife). Generally\, just pulling the plants has proven to be the most practical method.\nPulling location: Approx. 1/2 – 3/4 mile up the trail on the north slope\, facing West Richland. If you don’t meet up with the group in the parking lot\, hike on up and look for us down-slope from the trail. If you get to the first big switchback-turn on the trail\, looking down on the West Richland water storage tank\, you should see us down the hill. Terrain is sloped and uneven. \nPlease forward this notice to anyone else you think might be interested. SUMMARY:July 18th Noxious Weed Pulling
DESCRIPTION:Yet another noxious weed pulling effort on Candy Mountain is planned for this coming Wednesday. Yellow Star Thistle is reaching bloom stage and will soon be forming seed. The volunteer crews are trying to prevent any seed formation and dispersal this year. The manual pulling efforts last year yielded very good results in the areas we were able to cover. However\, the invasive weed pressure is still strong in some areas not reached last year. Continued volunteer help for a couple more weeks\, should give us a good start towards returning the Candy Mountain Preserve to a more pristine natural state. \nWhen: Wednesday\, July 18th\, 2018\nMeet at: Candy Mountain Trail-head parking lot\, off Dallas Rd. on PR 669 Rd.\nTime: 7:00 – 10:00 am\, but feel free to join us at any other time that fits your schedule. SUMMARY:Trailwork Party for National Trails Day
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Badger Mountain will be teaming with the Kennewick REI store for a National Trails Day work event. We will be working from 9 AM to noon. Please come a little early to sign in. \nWe will be clearing the weeds away from the edges of the Canyon and Sagebrush Trails. We like to remove the grasses\, mustards and other plants from around the rocks along the edge of the trail and from the uphill edge where they are narrowing the trail. The weeds will be pulled or cut off with hoes and McLeods. Kind of like working in a garden. \nWe will meet at Trailhead Park and break into groups\, pick up tools and hike up the trails for the work. All work will be on the Canyon and Sagebrush Trails\, there will not be any work in Trailhead Park itself. \nYou should bring water and snacks\, work gloves\, sunscreen\, and dress for the weather forecast. All tools will be provided. Since we will be moving along the trail while we work\, you should also bring a small pack to carry your water and extra cloths in. \nSignups are not required but it would be nice if you let me know that you are coming. It helps with planning and making sure we have all the tools we need. Please let me know by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org

SUMMARY:Trailwork Day - April 22nd
DESCRIPTION:This week our trailmaster is leading trail work days on Friday\, Saturday\, and Sunday from 9 AM to 1 PM on Candy Mountain. The work will be to recover the gravel that has wandered off to the side of the trails. We will be working with rakes and McLeods. If you are interested in taking part please let our trialmaster know by contacting him at trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org. \nNote that there is little work for preteens and younger\, it is hard to keep them on task. The work is not difficult and you can work at your own pace and take a break when you want. You need to bring work gloves\, water and snacks\, and dress for the weather forecast. All tools are provided.
