SUMMARY:Trailwork Park - March 10th
DESCRIPTION:The work we are doing is raking the gravel back on to the Canyon Trail. The gravel forms a hard layer protecting the soft dirt from wear\, without it the trails would rapidly turn into gulleys. Over time as we use the trails the gravel moves against the rock edge and the trailmaster would like to get it spread back across the trail. This week we will finish the top 700 feet of the Canyon Trail and then will start down the east Skyline Trail recovering the gravel and removing some of those rocks that sticking up. The ground is nice and moist\, it is a good time to be doing this. We will be using rakes and McLeods. We continually move along the trail so please bring a pack to carry your water and extra clothes. \n\n\n\nThe trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-day break.  Volunteers need to bring work gloves\, water\, and snacks with a small pack to carry them\, and dress for the weather forecast. There isn’t any work for preteens and younger – it is hard to keep them motivated for 4 hours.  You will need to sign-up so the trailmaster can plan the work and bake enough cookies.  Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - March 14th
DESCRIPTION:Weekly Update: On Friday the crews completed the work on the Canyon Trail\, it looks great. We moved over to the Skyline Trail on Saturday and were blown away just before quitting time but did get to see a double rainbow while hiking down. On Sunday we made it to the top\, felt the wind push us around and then called it a day. Again we saw a rainbow on the way down. Never did see where that pot of gold was. \n\n\n\nThe weather for this week looks pretty good so far with highs in the 60’s\, maybe even up to 70. Since it has finally warmed up the trailmaster will be moving the start time to 8:00 in the morning. There will be work parties on Thursday through Sunday\, 8 till noon. We will also be meeting at the Trails Building at Westgate Parking lot (the Skyline trailhead off of Dallas Road) and then drive up to the summit. \n\n\n\nThe work we are doing is raking the gravel back on to the Canyon Trail. The gravel forms a hard layer protecting the soft dirt from wear\, without it the trails would rapidly turn into gulleys. Over time as we use the trails the gravel moves to the downhill edge and the trailmaster would like to get it spread back across the trail. We will also be removing some rocks that now stick up in the trail. The ground is still nice and moist\, it is a good time to be doing this. We will be using rakes and McLeods plus some picks to get the rocks out. We continually move along the trail so please bring a pack to carry your water and extra clothes. \n\n\n\nThe trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-morning break. Volunteers need to bring work gloves\, water\, and snacks with a small pack to carry them\, and dress for the weather forecast. Remember if there is a little breeze at home there will be much more on the top where we are working. There isn’t any work for preteens and younger – it is hard to keep them motivated for 4 hours. You will need to sign-up so the trailmaster can plan the work and bake enough cookies. Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org \n\n\n\nIf you can’t make it this week\, there will work parties every Thursday through Sunday into April to do some general trail maintenance along the trail system.

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - March 28th
DESCRIPTION:Update: We lost Thursday to high winds\, Friday was a good day and we laid down about 500 feet of fresh gravel\, Saturday was cut short by much needed rain and today the trailmaster had only one helper. So progress its slow but we are getting a lot of rocks removed from the Skyline Trail. We had many people tell us how well the trail looked as they passed. \n\n\n\nThis Week: The weather for this coming week looks good with highs in the 60’s. There will be work parties on Thursday through Sunday\, 8 till noon. Yes\, even on Easter if people want to work that day. We will be meeting at the Trails Building at Westgate Parking lot (the Skyline trailhead off of Dallas Road) and then drive up to the summit. We will be working on the East Skyline Trail\, working from the top down. The work will be to restore the trail by pulling the gravel back up on to it and removing rocks that have worked their way to the surface. New gravel will also be added to complete the restoration. Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org \n\n\n\nIf you can’t make it this week\, there will work parties every Thursday through Sunday into mid-April to do some general trail maintenance along the trail system.

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - April 4th
DESCRIPTION:Update: The weather was great last week and the flowers are coming out.  We had some good crews and great progress.  We have completed rebuilding and graveling about 1600 feet of the trail starting at the Badger summit down the east Skyline Trail to about 25 feet shy of the 2.25 mile marker.  Still getting a lot of comments on how great the trail now looks. \n\n\n\nThis Week: The weather for this coming week looks good with highs around 60 with a chance of needed rain.  There will be work parties on Thursday through Sunday\, 8 till noon.  We will be meeting at the Trails Building at Westgate Parking lot (the Skyline trailhead off of Dallas Road) and then drive up to near the work. \n\n\n\nWe will be working on the East Skyline Trail\, continuing down as far as we have time.  The work will be to restore the trail by pulling the gravel back up on to it and removing rocks that have worked their way to the surface and making it 5 feet wide.  New gravel will also be added to complete the restoration. Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org

DESCRIPTION:This week will be the end of the spring trail work season\, it is getting really dry out there.  The trailmaster will have work parties on Thursday through Sunday like usual but the work and location will depend on how many volunteers the trailmaster have.  The trailmaster am not starting anything that the trailmaster can’t complete.  We will be meeting at the Trails Building next to the Westgate Parking lot (the Skyline trailhead off of Dallas Road). \n\n\n\nThe trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-morning break.  Volunteers need to bring work gloves\, water\, and snacks with a small pack to carry them\, and dress for the weather forecast.

SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Hike
DESCRIPTION:June 20th is the summer solstice\, on which the last sunset of spring – or the first sunset of summer – occurs at 8:53 PM. Some of us will be on top of Badger Mountain to celebrate this biannual celestial event. \n\n\n\nWe’ll leave from the Badger Mountain Trailhead asphalt parking lot at the top of Queensgate Dr\, by 8:00. We’ll take the Canyon Trail to get to the western summit of Badger Mt\, at the second set of towers facing Rattlesnake Mt\, before the sun sets. Or take whatever route you want\, and we’ll hope to see you on top. Bring a friend\, a light jacket\, and a flashlight in case you linger on the mountaintop.

SUMMARY:Weeding Crew - July 3rd
DESCRIPTION:Board member Dave Beach will be leading a volunteer weed crew on this day. \n\n\n\nDuties:  Locating and hand pulling Yellow Starthistle and Diffuse Knapweed Plants.  The Rush Skeletonweed plants are left rooted in the ground\, but are clipped of their blooms and buds\, and the remaining plant stems individually “painted” with Roundup herbicide (not all of our group does this job).  Plants range in size from short\, small plants only a few inches in height to larger branched plants that are nearly 3 feet in height\, and with thorns.  They may occur as single plants or in patches.  Presently we are seeing some of the weeds approaching the blooming stage which makes them more distinguishable from the native plants.  Generally\, just pulling and bagging the plant material has proven to be the most practical method of removal\, while doing the least damage to the native plants. \n\n\n\nIf you’re interested in volunteer\, please contact Dave at davidbeach47@gmail.com or by cell at 509-554-0919
