SUMMARY:Weeding Crew - June 4th
DESCRIPTION:Duties: Locating and hand pulling Yellow Starthistle and Diffuse Knapweed Plants. The Rush Skeletonweed plants are left rooted in the ground\, but are clipped of their blooms and buds\, and the remaining plant stems individually “painted” with Roundup herbicide. (not all crew members do this task). Plants range in size from short\, small plants to larger branched plants with thorns. At present\, plants are ranging from only a few inches in height up to nearly 3 feet in height\, depending on species and individual growing conditions. They may occur as single plants\, small groupings\, or in small patches. Presently\, the werdmaster is seeing some weeds approaching the blooming stage\, making them more easily identified. We will bag and remove the plant material. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTools and Clothing: Bring good strong gloves — leather is best! Long sleeved shirts and long pants are recommended for scratch and sun protection. Don’t forget a hat. A small set of pruning clippers is sometimes useful. Generally\, just pulling and bagging the plants has proven to be the most practical method of removal. Since we are constantly moving\, a fanny pack or small backpack is useful to carry your “stuff” — gloves\, phone\, water\, snacks\, tools\, sun protection\, etc. Bring heavier plastic bags for the weeds if you have them – like feed bags or potting soil bags\, etc. The weedmaster will have bags\, too. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTerrain: We are working off-trail where the ground is sloped and uneven with plenty of dry Cheatgrass\, rocky in some areas — sturdy boots recommended. The weedmaster suggests using boot gaiters to keep the Cheatgrass out of your socks and boots. The Cheatgrass is again plentiful this year! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nReply to: davidbeach47@gmail.com Please let the weedmaster know as early as possible\, so they can have an idea who to be looking for and how large of a group to expect for assignments\, etc. After meeting at the parking lot\, we sometimes drive our vehicles\, or carpool to another location closer to the work area.

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - April 20th
DESCRIPTION:Weekly Update: This will be the last week of the spring trailwork season.  If you were planning to help then this is it until October. There will be some days of cutting the weeds back with string trimmers and maybe pulling tumbleweeds. With the wet winter there will probably be lot of them. It was a good week with great weather and crews. OK Saturday’s crew was not so good because I had only one helper but I had good turnout the other three days including 10 helpers from Visit Tri-Cities on Thursday. Got a lot done that day. Over the four days we completed another 300 feet in our project to widen and regravel the Skyline Trail. The work is going quicker because the uphill bank is not as tall. \n\n\n\nTrailwork Plan: Widening the Skyline Trail will continue being the main work for this season.  We will be making it at least 5 feet wide from below the summit working our way west. For all of these we will meet at the Trails Building by the Westgate Parking lot off of Dallas Road (west side of Badger) and then carpool to near the work. The trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-morning break. Volunteers need to bring work gloves\, water\, and snacks with a small pack to carry them\, and dress for the weather forecast. There isn’t any work for preteens – it is hard to keep them motivated for 4 hours. Those 13 to 15 will have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. You will need to sign-up so the trailmaster can plan the work\, bake enough cookies and let you know if plans change. Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.orgCan’t make it this week? Well there will be work parties until mid-April. Pick a day and get a friend to come with you and let the trailmaster know you are coming.Jim LangdonTrailmaster\, Friends of Badger MountainTrailmaster@friendsofbadger.org509-943-3992 (home-best) or 509-940-7234 (cell)

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - March 30th
DESCRIPTION:Weekly Weekly Update: Last week we lost three days due to the weather but while it was blowing outside we finished the work in the Trails Building Thursday and Saturday\, the one good weather day\, we did some exploratory work for a trail to Little Badger.  No Badger Mountain Challenge runners over there!Trailwork Plan: Widening the Skyline Trail will continue being the main work for this season.

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - March 16th
DESCRIPTION:Weekly Update: With the start of the spring trail work season last week’s crew completed the 75 foot long trail extension on the Candy Mountain summit and ran us out of rocks for the rock wall on the Sagebrush Trail along with fixing the fence in the Westgate parking lot. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAgain this spring the trailmaster will have work parties every Thursday through Sunday starting at 8 and ending at noon. Our end date is when the soil dries out or the trailmaster gets tired\, so some time around the middle of April. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTrailwork Plan: OK\, for this week the trailmaster will have a collection of jobs and which one we work will depend on how many helpers there are. Adding rocks along the edge of the Candy Trail or widening the Skyline Trail or maybe placing some signs and a barricade or two. For all of these we will meet at the Trails Building by the Westgate Parking lot off of Dallas Road (west side of Badger) and then carpool to near the work. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-morning break. SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - March 14th
SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - December 1st
DESCRIPTION:This Week’s Plan: We finally have some moisture so we can get back to working on the Sagebrush Trail rock wall. In part of the Sagebrush Trail the dirt is different\, it doesn’t stick together very well so it is continually sluffing off on to the trail. The wall was started a few years ago and we work on it when we can. We will use the gravel hauler to move rocks to the work site and then stack them. Tools will small hand trowels\, packing sticks and little shovel work. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday and Sunday\, November 30 and December 1.Time: 8 to noon \n\n\n\nMeeting Place: by the Trails Building at the Badger Mountain Westgate parking lot off of Dallas Road. We will then carpool to near the work site. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-morning break. SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - November 24th
DESCRIPTION:This week we will continue working on the east Skyline Trail. We should finish to the east end\, about 1300 feet remain. The remaining work will be a little adjustments to the width and adding a little new gravel. The trailmaster does not anticipate many more rocks that need to be removed. The trail in this area is mostly dirt and it is easy work to widen and smooth the trail out with McLeods and rakes and adding the new gravel. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-morning break.  Volunteers need to bring work gloves\, water\, and snacks with a small pack to carry them\, and dress for the weather forecast.  There isn’t any work for preteens and younger – it is hard to keep them motivated for 4 hours.  You will need to sign-up so the trailmaster can plan the work and bake enough cookies.  Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThere may be more work parties after Thanksgiving\, we will have to see how the weather holds out.
