SUMMARY:Hike Through Time (National Park Service hike)
DESCRIPTION:Join Manhattan Project National Historical Park rangers on a free guided\, 3.6-mile (5.8 km) round-trip hike up Candy Mountain on Saturday\, October 5 from 12:00 to 2:30pm Pacific time. There will be several stops along the trail up to the summit where rangers will share short histories about the events and people that shaped the mid-Columbia region. Hikers will move forward in time as the stops progress from the Ice Age Floods to the Manhattan Project and its legacies. Topics will include the Native Peoples who have lived here since time immemorial\, the Lewis and Clark Expedition\, the arrival of Christian missionaries\, and the selection of Hanford for plutonium production during World War II. \n\n\n\nHikers will gain 555 feet (170 m) of elevation as they hike to the top of Candy Mountain. Participants should be prepared to hike uphill\, bring water and food\, and plan for a variety of weather. \n\n\n\nMeet in the Candy Mountain trailhead parking lot by 11:45am for a 12:00pm departure.  \n\n\n\nTo ensure the safety of all participants\, hikers will: *Be able to go the distance. This is a moderate hike to the top of Candy Mountain. *Be prepared to be outside for several hours and dress appropriately for the weather. Close-toed shoes\, hat\, and sunglasses are recommended. *Bring water and snacks to make sure you have enough energy to complete the hike. Food and water are not provided or available for purchase during the hike.  \n\n\n\nFor more information\, visit https://www.nps.gov/…/pla…/hanford-hike-through-time.htm.

SUMMARY:Tailwork Party - October 24
DESCRIPTION:The work is recovering gravel that has worked its way to the edge of the trail. We will use McLeods (rake/hoe thingy) and rakes. We first pull the gravel back on to the trail and then rake it smooth. \n\n\n\nThe trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-morning break. Volunteers need to bring work gloves\, water\, and snacks with a small pack to carry them\, and dress for the weather forecast. There isn’t any work for preteens and younger – it is hard to keep them motivated for 4 hours. You will need to sign-up so the trailmaster can plan the work and bake enough cookies. Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org \n\n\n\nIf you can’t make it this week\, there will work parties on Thursday through Sunday\, until around Thanksgiving. We will see how the weather holds out.

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - November 7th
DESCRIPTION:This week the trailmaster will be working on the east Skyline Trail\, continuing to remove rocks\, widen it out to 5 feet and then adding some new gravel.  A large group from Gesa already cleaned up about 700 feet of the trail this fall.  The actual work will be to remove rocks from the trail bed using pick mattocks and hauling the rocks off with our gravel hauler.  Then smoothing the trail out with McLeods and rakes and adding the new gravel. Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - November 14th
DESCRIPTION:The crews last week completed removing the rocks from the worse part of the east Skyline Trail and graveled about 400 feet of it.  The trails are still pretty dry but hopefully this week’s rain will help that. \n\n\n\nThis week we will continue working on the east Skyline Trail.  The work will be to remove a few more rocks near the lower road crossing\, widen it out to 5 feet and then adding some new gravel.  The remaining rocks near the road are a little bigger so we will be using pick mattocks and pry bars.  Other than those few remaining rocks the trail in this area is mostly dirt and it is easy work to widen and smooth the trail out with McLeods and rakes and adding the new gravel. \n\n\n\nWhen: Thursday through Sunday\, November 14 to 17. \n\n\n\nTime: 8 to noon \n\n\n\nMeeting Place: the Badger Mountain Westgate parking lot off of Dallas Road.  We will then carpool to near the work site. \n\n\n\nLast week the trailmaster had one helper on Thursday\, five on Friday\, two on Saturday and three on Sunday.  Potential schedule this week depending on help:  Thursday remove the last of the rocks.  Last week the crew had a blast getting out the large rocks.  It is teamwork and you don’t have to be strong to do it.  On Friday or Saturday the trailmaster would like to have at least five helpers lay down the gravel.  Hopefully on Sunday we can then finish this project with cleaning up the last of the trail.

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - November 30th
DESCRIPTION:This Week’s Plan: We finally have some moisture so we can get back to working on the Sagebrush Trail rock wall. In part of the Sagebrush Trail the dirt is different\, it doesn’t stick together very well so it is continually sluffing off on to the trail. The wall was started a few years ago and we work on it when we can. We will use the gravel hauler to move rocks to the work site and then stack them. Tools will small hand trowels\, packing sticks and little shovel work. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday and Sunday\, November 30 and December 1.Time: 8 to noon \n\n\n\nMeeting Place: by the Trails Building at the Badger Mountain Westgate parking lot off of Dallas Road. SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - March 13th
DESCRIPTION:Weekly Update: With the start of the spring trail work season last week’s crew completed the 75 foot long trail extension on the Candy Mountain summit and ran us out of rocks for the rock wall on the Sagebrush Trail along with fixing the fence in the Westgate parking lot. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAgain this spring the trailmaster will have work parties every Thursday through Sunday starting at 8 and ending at noon. Our end date is when the soil dries out or the trailmaster gets tired\, so some time around the middle of April. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTrailwork Plan: OK\, for this week the trailmaster will have a collection of jobs and which one we work will depend on how many helpers there are. Adding rocks along the edge of the Candy Trail or widening the Skyline Trail or maybe placing some signs and a barricade or two. For all of these we will meet at the Trails Building by the Westgate Parking lot off of Dallas Road (west side of Badger) and then carpool to near the work. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-morning break. SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - March 16th
Volunteers need to bring work gloves\, water\, and snacks with a small pack to carry them\, and dress for the weather forecast. There isn’t any work for preteens – it is hard to keep them motivated for 4 hours. Those 13 to 15 will have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. You will need to sign-up so the trailmaster can plan the work\, bake enough cookies and let you know if plans change. Please let the trailmaster know that you are coming by sending an email to trailmaster@friendsofbadger.org \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCan’t make it this week? Well there will be work parties until mid-April. Pick a day and get a friend to come with you and let the trailmaster know you are coming. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJim LangdonTrailmaster\, Friends of Badger MountainTrailmaster@friendsofbadger.org509-943-3992 (home-best) or 509-940-7234 (cell)

SUMMARY:Trailwork Party - March 20th
DESCRIPTION:Weekly Update: The second week of the spring trail work season we had lots of wind\, impacting 3 of the 4 days.  On Friday we did have some nice weather and the crew worked on the Skyline Trial just below the summit\, widening about 100 feet of it.  This is a continuation of our effort to make all the trails at least 5 feet wide. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOn the other three days there was that wind and a little rain.  I had a project in the Trails Building that we worked on – installing a row of sheathing around the inside of the building.Trailwork Plan: Widening the Skyline Trail will continue being the main work for this season.  We will be making it at least 5 feet wide from below the summit working our way west. For all of these we will meet at the Trails Building by the Westgate Parking lot off of Dallas Road (west side of Badger) and then carpool to near the work. The trailmaster will provide all the tools and even some homemade cookies at the mid-morning break.
